CHAPTER 20

FINN

My three-year-old niece tugs on my jeans. “Where’s my present?”

“Um. Yeah. Let me see.” I open my wallet and hand her a hundred-dollar bill.

“Thanks!” She runs off waving the money in the air like a tiny flag.

My mother gives me a look. “What is she going to do with a hundred dollars?”

I shrug. “She liked it.”

“She’s three. She likes everything.” My mom hands me a bowl of sliced watermelon. “Take this to the picnic table outside.”

When I walk outside, I’m blasted with awful kid’s music and hordes of screaming children. They are dressed in sparkly costumes and make a beeline for the platter of fruit before I can even set it down. They all look so sticky.

I was in prison for three-and-a-half years, surely, I can handle a child’s birthday party for a few hours. I last thirty seconds before I turn around to go back inside, but my brother stops me, and steers me towards the grill.

Darrah and his wife, Ruby, are sitting in chairs watching their son play with the other children. They wave at me, and I force a smile on my face.

“Stop it, you look creepy.” Jack hands me a beer. “They know you. You don’t have to pretend to be normal.”

“Shut up. How long are these things?”

“Two hours, hopefully less. No one actually wants to be here except for the kids.” He tilts his head towards the children running in circles on the lawn, then looks toward some ladies talking near the bounce house. “I could introduce you to some single moms.”

“No, thanks.”

I look over to the group of women and see several are staring my way. “Not my type.”

“Yeah, I was kidding. It’s like a restraining order waiting to happen.”

“Hilarious. As it turns out, I’m seeing someone. I’m surprised Mom didn’t tell you already.”

“Oh yeah? Who is she?”

“He is a man.”

His eyebrows knit together. “That actually makes sense. Do I know him?”

I nod slowly. “Dante Valentino.”

“The man you rescued from the fight at Ivan’s?” His eyes widen. “How the fuck does that work?”

“So far, he’s the bottom and I—”

“Jesus, Finn.” Jack pulls me closer to the speaker blaring terrible children’s music and whispers, “I mean, he’s in the Mafia.”

“Yeah, and he’s getting married in a few weeks so it’s not an issue.”

Saying it feels terrible. The wedding is now weeks, not months, away. My chest tightens and I feel a little sick. I knew it was coming, but now that I’ve said it out loud, it’s real. Like Bloody Mary—if I say it three times fast, I bring it to life. Somehow stupidly, I thought it would be easy to walk away at this point. I know now that I need months and years to finish what we started.

A whole lifetime.

Fuck.

Is this how love begins? It just feels like you need to be with somebody as much as humanly possible, and then you never want to leave? I don’t like it.

Jack snorts a laugh. “Leave it to my little bro to want the most unavailable man in New York City.
