Chapter Nineteen

~

A deera wanted to examine the nugget before Des had an opportunity to tell the woman their story. “This is an interesting item,” the woman said. “I find it hard to believe you found it in a tiny village.”

“I don’t know anything about gold nuggets in Jiksara,” Penta Fastil said.

“Close to a tiny village,” Des admitted. “We were exploring the hills between the villages and Jiksara. Volst and I passed a sentry. Neither of us was in shape for much of a fight, but we got into one anyway. I don’t think they intended to let us pass.”

Adeera looked at the token. “And one of them had this?”

Des nodded. “In his purse.”

“He might have stolen this off of someone else,” Adeera said. “Perhaps they weren’t sentries or guards, but simple highwaymen.”

For a moment, Des thought Adeera had a good point. Was his instinct off? But he shook his head. “Why would highwaymen lie in wait along a rarely-used track that led to an isolated valley?”

“We didn’t pass another soul the entire afternoon,” Volst said. “Those men were there to keep people out.”

Adeera merely nodded and gave the nugget back to Des. “I think you are better off heading to Jiksara and leaving Redwitzel far behind. Don’t worry about my task, but if by chance you can help me keep Redwitzel from being annexed, that would be appreciated, but I can see you won’t be of much use in town.”

“You mean to abandon you?” Volst asked.

Adeera laughed. “Do you think you are abandoning me?”

“I think she is right,” Des said. We’ve been going around in circles since we arrived in Redwitzel, literally. I’m ready to recuperate in Jiksara, and if there is nothing in the capital for us, we move out of Viksar. I just wish we could have found out what happened to the missing youth.”

Volst looked a little shocked, but Des had decided before they talked to Adeera.

When Des and Volst returned to the inn to tell them what happened, Glynna and Mara almost sighed with relief.

“We can visit my cousin,” Glynna said. “She was a member of the Order of Gold for less than two years, but hopefully, she can tell us what is going on in the capital.”

“I’m ready too,” Mara said. “I hope she won’t be disappointed I reneged on my offer for her to be my manager.”

“She didn’t even mention it,” Des said. “Let’s leave tomorrow. I’ll visit Jopper now before he leaves the guard headquarters for the day.”

With the burden of Redwitzel off his back, Des entered Jopper’s office with as much a bounce as his wounds would permit.

“We are leaving tomorrow. Is that okay?”

Jopper rose from his seat. “You haven’t heard the news?”

“News?” Des asked.

“Torgan Kantak is no longer among the living. He died an hour ago. Someone might have helped him along.”

Des lost the bounce. “It wasn’t me,” Des said.

“I didn’t say it was. A woman walked into his bedroom and smothered him. Torgan was too weak to fight a flea off.
