It was past midnight when Cie crept quietly into Jemma’s apartment.

She’d had a time getting in. The balcony door – never usually locked – (why would you on the twentieth floor?) – was bolted, as was the screen. Cie had silently cursed as she’d picked both the locks, wondering why she hadn’t simply made herself a key. Or, she thought belatedly, messaged Jemma to see if she was welcome in the first place. Stupid.

Inside the apartment, Jemma had left a lamp on low. In the dim, orange glow Cie could see the place was unusually tidy. In the kitchen, a single mug was up-ended on the drying board. The knife block was empty. A clean frypan sat on the counter top – nowhere near the stove. Cie narrowed her eyes. She strode silently to the front door. The lock was bolted, the chain hanging in its slider. A broom handle, with the broomhead removed, leant up in a corner. Cie frowned at it for a moment, then realised. It was a weapon – so was the frypan. Jemma was frightened.

Back in the lounge room, she slipped her jacket off and folded it neatly over the back of a chair, then shrugged out of her knife holster and draped that over her jacket. She stepped out of her shoes and moved silently to the bedroom. Jemma had left a lamp on there too and in the half-light she could see her lying on her side, curled up in a ball.

Cie sat carefully on the edge of the bed and watched the sleeping woman.

The sheet rested gently on the curve of her hip, the line of her thigh. At her shoulder, it fell away and revealed the swell of her breasts, her arms pulled tight against them, her hands tucked under her cheek. The light caught on her warm, brown skin and made her glow. It picked up sparkles in her jet black hair and filled it with stars.

She was beautiful – so beautiful Cie held her breath and felt her heart skip an irregular beat in her chest. What was she doing with this girl – so delicate, so special, so fragile? She’d put her in the same room as a killer today. She’d risked Jemma’s life – and her friends’ lives. If there’d been another arrow… if she’d been a little slower… She was risking Jemma’s life just by knowing her – and she could see that Jemma was scared. What was she doing dragging such beautiful innocence into the mess that was Cie’s life? If she loved her—

She stopped herself. Love?

She brushed the thought away. She knew she was guilty but she also knew she was selfish. Greedy. She was intoxicated and she was lost. Helpless. She wanted Jemma more than she had ever wanted anything in her life. She wanted her knowing the danger to Jemma. And she hated herself, because she knew she was prepared to keep on risking Jemma’s life just to keep her. Could you call that love?

She whispered, wondering if the sound, in the end, would be a death warrant.
