Chapter 12
Nick led us to the back room, where Loui was hunched over a screen, whispering to himself. I rounded him, glancing at the screen to see what had them so stressed. It took a moment to register the red dots moving together. Fifteen or more tagged were moving in unison up the grid just to the east of us. I looked at Gray, his eyes wide and body rigid as Nick tapped the screen, right in front of the moving dots.
“Where are they going?” he asked. My eyes followed their trajectory, trying to recognize which direction they were moving. It wasn’t toward the strip mall, it was…oh no.
My heart free-fell from my chest with the blood that had drained from my face, leaving me cold and sickly. The training facility. They were heading right to the facility, where we were supposed to be, where we would have been able to help. They were well equipped, but I didn’t know if their system was on or how never having to deal with a herd would affect their response time.
“We need to go now,” I yelled, racing out of the door back into the bar, with Gray closing in behind me.
“What should I do?” Nick called out after us.
“Stay here, stay safe,” I hollered back. It would be better for him to watch out for whoever was left around here. He was trained but not the way the hunters were, and I feared he’d be more of a burden than help.
“Loui, where’s the phone?” I needed to get back, but I also needed to warn them, and I didn’t get cell service out here. He grabbed the handset from under the bar and handed it to me. I dialed the number I had been forced to memorize years ago, listening to the ringing on the other end, praying someone would pick up.
Nothing. I tried again.
“They aren’t answering!” I was panicking. “Gray, we’ve got to go. Loui, lock up tight tonight until I can make sure there are extra hunters here.”
I ran to the car, swinging the door open and jamming the key into the ignition. Gray was barely in his seat before I had the car in reverse, the tires taking a moment before they could catch traction and catapult us backward. He slammed the door shut as I stomped on the gas, heading back the way we came to the facility. I drove better speeding and scared than I did calm.
“Sam, slow down!” Gray begged.
“I can’t, people could die!” I snapped back, trying my best to focus.
“You could die!” he yelled back at me.
“You’ll be fine.” I tried to calm him, positive he omitted the ‘we’ to seem tough. I thought he’d argue more, but when I casted a glance his way, he averted his eyes, trying to keep the stress that was etched across his face hidden.
We came to a skidding halt in front of the gate, sending rocks flying, ricocheting off of the objects around us. I barely heard Gray ask me to wait before I had opened the door, running straight for the gate.
