Chapter Seven

Throughout his life, Jeremiah Woodson made many promises. Many under false impressions behind the veil of his own fictional character created in part through the Accountant, and most broken by the end of a mission. But none hurt him, not until now, when the news came through the radio of the BMW M5, taking a drive back to Sue Bethany with intentions of learning more, that the esteemed scientist was killed in her home the day prior.

“Rest in peace,” Jeremiah said. There was nothing more to say. He still knew nothing about his past, or what she was talking about the day before, and today would be the day he pried for answers. Answers that he knew he’d get from Sterling Kane at the end of his mission, but at the same time, getting ahead of the curve was always in his wheelhouse. Bonnie and Clyde got to her first, and there was nothing Jeremiah could do about it.

These people were targeting those that knew about Jeremiah. It was easy for the mind to wander that, eventually, they’d be coming for him. In fact, if the black spot brought him a vision of his demise, there would be no surprise. He’d understand and accept that this was his fate and that somewhere between the blurred lines, Jeremiah Woodson was a target to another sinister organization. Maybe because of what he’d been doing for the better part of five years. But he’d never go down without a fight. As long as he was breathing, he’d serve and protect by any means necessary.

With his day’s plans ruined by Bonnie and Clyde, Jeremiah took a drive. There was nowhere to go and nothing to do but drive. Protecting Sterling was his primary mission, but he’d been setting up patrol routes and private guards to keep him safe lately anyway. And Jeremiah found no fear in the two appearing the same day as Sue Bethany was murdered.

Lay low and keep your head down, make sure everyone’s distracted, and find the perfect opportunity to strike.

The Predator’s way.

After seeing as much of New Orleans as he cared to see, from the inner city to the outskirts, Jeremiah stopped on a long street, getting out of the BMW. On the outskirts of the city, Jeremiah felt safe; the closer he came to the center, the more the unpredictability of the black spot’s magic burdened his mind. Was it preparing another strike? Another visit like that day on the bus?

He pushed it aside, making his way into a restaurant to get a meal for lunch.

The restaurant was like nothing he’d ever seen before. With what he assumed to be fake shrunken heads, jars and vials filled to the brim with various preserved insects or animals, and a sensation of voodoo magic encumbering the place. What voodoo magic felt like, he had no idea. At the same time, he also understood that he was already on edge, already on the verge of collapse to fear of the Blackened giving him another meeting.
