A Thing Apart
No man is an island but every corpse is.
Behold the late RT, disempowered, dispossessed, and voiceless; alone beyond loneliness, solitary beyond solitude, as separated, without any sense of separation as a pebble. The weight of the body and the resistance of the bed are no more in dialogue than the mutual pressure between the bed and the floor on which it stands. The objects are connected only in the eyes of the living, who neighbour them. The mottled skin, which no longer delivers intelligence about the world, defines a boundary that is no one’s boundary.
His 27,000 yesterdays had seen him connected, interconnected, and disconnected. His consciousness had reached out to a world of persons, places, and things, and they had reached into him. He had been a site of meanings whose locus was neither inside nor outside him: RT was a between-being. Now, as the saying goes, he is ‘no longer with us’. He is no longer with himself. He is no longer ‘with’ at all.
From this utter privation, we may recall, or imagine, the extent to which he was linked with, or divided from, his fellow worldlings and, indeed, the world itself, to what degree he was dissolved, or enisled, in the wider sea in which he had lived his life; consider the ‘us’ he is not longer with and reflect on all the varieties of ‘with’; to remember RT as confidant and stranger, lover and fellow passenger, insider and outsider, at the centre and on the edge, participant and onlooker, bystander and protagonist, on the bench and in the ruck, leader and straggler, in charge, in another’s charge.
