One factor that could account for these patterns is racial residential segregation. For example, though not shown here, the index of dissimilarity between blacks and whites in 2000 in Greensboro and Riverside is 59.0 and 46.2, respectively, somewhat lower than the black/white segregation index for U.S. metropolitan areas as a whole (60.4). On the other hand, the index of dissimilarity between blacks and whites in Fort Wayne (70.9), New York (81.8), and Honolulu (the exception at 35.8) is in general higher than that for U.S. metropolitan areas as a whole.22 Thus, these patterns raise the interesting question of to what extent sprawl is related to racial segregation and whether this relationship is weaker or stronger than that between residential segregation and blacks/jobs mismatch. These questions will be explored later in the analysis.
