Faryn

“Faryn, it’s Kylian, from Calmet Security.” His voice still has that same smoky, deep sound over the phone as it does in person. It makes me blush and giggle like a schoolgirl, if I’m honest.

“Okay. How can I help? Do you need to speak with Corey, he’s right here.” I offer back, moving towards my appointed caretaker.

“No. I’ve already spoken with Corey.” Kylian’s answer gives me pause.

I hum an ‘oh’ at him, glancing over towards Corey who stands like a statue in my kitchen, avoiding my inquisitive looks.

“May I come up?” Kylian asks after a few drawn out moments of silence.

“Why?” I ask slowly.

“Because I would prefer to speak with you face to face.” He replies quickly, like he already knew my reservations.

“What about Corey? I don’t want him swapped. We get along fine.”

“Can I come up?” He continues, completely ignoring my comment.

I turn and walk from the kitchen over to the intercom system, buzzing down to the front reception asking if they can confirm I have a guest waiting. After establishing it is indeed Kylian, they give him access to my floor.

I go back to him waiting on my phone, good manners instilled from years in the service industry guiding me, because I’m still a little miffed at Calmet Security management after our first shitty face-to-face and subsequent meeting.

“I’ll see you in a moment.” I hang up before walking back into the kitchen where Corey waits, his face blank, as usual. I move in close enough that he can see I’m not happy with being left out of the loop. I thought we were starting to share a good working relationship, come friendship. Apparently not.

“Any idea why he’s coming up, Corey?” My words are like little barbs, but ever the professional Corey keeps his blank facade and imposing stance in place.

“It’s not my business, Faryn. You know I can’t say anything.” Corey carefully avoids making eye contact, effectively shutting down any further discussion on the matter.

I look over my shoulder at the time. It’s fast approaching when I need to leave. “Fine. You can let him in then. I need to grab a couple of things and then I’m leaving.”

I don’t wait for a response, because like a good little bodyguard he won’t engage on a personal level nor offer anything more. Instead, I go to my room more than frustrated. I grab my overnight bag off the floor, plonking it on my bed to double check I have something to change into, plus additional toiletries, shoes, my spare phone and cash, in case of an emergency. One thing my brother always drilled into me was to be prepared for anything.

I stand staring at my bag before shooting off a quick text to Lydia, reminding her where I will be and setting up a time for check in. Before heading out, I double check my outfit in the long mirror in my wardrobe, stopping to touch up my lipstick.

Walking out in my black work shoes, I stop in the hallway to switch off all the lights.
