CHAPTER 14

MARCO? POLO.

Harvey drove his car off the freeway down an offramp as quickly as he could. He then pulled over and got out again.

With Harvey’s forehead having sealed itself, something else happened. Every muscle in his body bulked up so that, had Mr. Universe come walking by, he would’ve been swamp-green with envy. Now that he was much more familiar with his body behaving in such unpredictable ways, he merely looked down at himself in half curiosity, half boredom. However, the impressive effect was certainly not lost on him. Since the only mirrors he had were the rearview mirror and side mirrors, he settled on admiring his new physique by using the side window of his car to see his reflection. He flexed his powerful deltoids and then his massive pectorals.

The people driving by weren’t sure what to make of him. Between his perfect body and his strange poses, it’s a wonder no one crashed into him or anything else. Still, Harvey took a few more moments to admire how he looked, totally ignoring those people driving by, for he knew that this most recent change would also be temporary. Oh, well, he thought. At least when my body deflates back to normal it’ll be easier to find clothes that fit me.

Sure enough, a couple of minutes later his perfect body shrivelled back up to the boring, average version of himself with which he was so familiar. Harvey let out a sigh and accepted the change. At this point he finally noticed the traffic. Each person zoomed by in their vehicles, totally unaware of the strange experiences that Harvey was having, and of the episode that had just concluded. He looked down the road at the palm trees that lined the boulevard, enjoying watching their large fronds swaying in the breeze, this way and that.

After a few moments of reverie he warily climbed back into his car. He sat quietly for a moment, his mind flashing back and forth between various thoughts. What is going on with my body? Why is my car so weird?

As if on cue, his vehicle’s Onstar screen (which was still a bright red circle with black background) began to speak to him! “My name is M.A.R.C.O.!” the screen proclaimed with tremendous self-importance.

Harvey had never heard of an Onstar system behaving this way and it certainly didn’t sound anything like the GPS system. It sounds like a real person talking to me. This is insane! So taken aback was he that all he could say was, “What?”

With even more grandeur than before, the computer screen bellowed back, “M.A.R.C.O.!!”

“Polo?”

“What do you mean?” the computer system replied in obvious consternation.

Harvey continued to stare at the screen and couldn’t help but laugh at the whole situation. First he’d smashed his head into his steering wheel, then it healed quickly, then his body ballooned up and shrank again, now his car was...what? Exhibiting signs of extreme machismo? So, he couldn’t help but laugh. He laughed loud and hard. A
