YOU’D THINK IT WAS my first time hearing that tone. Feeling the words snap across my body like a whip lashing my flesh. His voice left no room to debate where his head was at. “Did I stutter?” He had no problems in the movement department, snatching his hands to his open fly. Not to pull off his belt and spank me with it. He was collecting himself. Trying futilely to stuff his engorged cock back into his pants. It didn’t approve of this new itinerary, but I knew my husband well enough to know he wasn’t messing around.

“Wait!” I gasped, snapping out of my stupor. I jerked to my feet, shaking my limbs like I was fresh off a no-stop road trip, throwing in an apologetic grin for good measure.

Jacob was not impressed. He’d managed to zip back up, but his belt was still loose. His face was anything but. His face was beautifully glacial, the sharp angles lethal—and pointed right at me. “Where are you, Leila?”

I knew he didn’t mean literally, but I had to hold back my desire to give him our street address. My snark. Using humor was more than a personality quirk. It was a defense mechanism. If I made him laugh (or roll his eyes) then we could skate right past the actions that brought us to the edge of an argument or a lover’s spat. From the tension that filled the air I had a feeling we were headed toward the latter, so I chose my words and my actions carefully.

I slipped from the couch and lowered myself to my knees. Felt the soft fibers beneath me and hellfire shooting from Jacob’s navy glare.

I sat back on my haunches, hands crossed one over the other. “I’m right here. Right where I want to be, Sir.”

My last word made a different kind of warmth fan the flames that flickered in the blue. It was the ‘Sir’. The magic word. His Achilles heel. His headstrong submissive, giving him his due respect. Giving him control.

He played it cool, leaning into the cushions and stretching his arms across the back of the couch.

A flash of want raced through my core when one side of his mouth quirked upward. Who was I kidding? This wasn’t playing or pretending. Jacob Whitmore made everything, even reclining, look extra cool. Extra sexy.

And it didn’t hurt that my little hiccup had no effect on his bottom half.

I tore my eyes from his crotch and dropped them to the floor, my heart pounding in my chest. “How may I serve you?”

I made him wait, so he did the same. Inhaling all the sexual tension in the room and exhaling playful desire.
