4. Blood and tears

I still have a hard time understanding how this three-day escapade, both heavenly and infernal, could not just simply be a product of my imagination. The memories bounce around in my head and I oscillate between exhilarating joy and bitterness. Someone decided to get in my way and try to separate me and Gabriel, sending me coded messages. Eric is in a really bad mood this morning. Rather than spread myself too thin, I try hard to concentrate on my new project: creating a section specifically for spirits. When I enter my boss' office, I note that Emilie is already there, sprawled out on a chair. She gives me an imploring look...

You look like you've been abusing sangria.

"Did you party all weekend or what? You're both really screwing up your Mondays, you should see your faces."

Our boss is an open and tolerant man, but since the beginning of the day, he's been coming up with one nasty remark after another. Like two model employees, we don't talk back, we just put up with it. In a few hours, Eric will probably say he's sorry and suggest we all go out and get a drink together.

While he reels off ten words a second, explaining his concept, I stop following the conversation and feel my stomach start to tie up in knots. It's the eleventh of April. My period is two days late. That's a first...

Later in the afternoon, Marion comes to pick me up from work for our weekly film night. With just one look, she understands that something isn't right.

"Let me guess...you had a fight with your billionaire!"

"No, and I'm warning you, I'm not in the mood for an interrogation."

"If you don't want me to ask questions, then tell me what happened!"

"I'm two days late."

"Your period?"

"Yes."

"But you're taking the pill, right?"

"Every day, at the same time. I never forget it."

"And you're never late, usually!"

"Very good, Sherlock."

"So how could it happen?"

"I have no idea, Marion, you can see that I'm having a rough time with this!"

"No form of contraception is 100% safe."

I say nothing.

"Ok, forget the film, let's go back home!"

For the next two hours, Marion tries to reassure me as best she can. She thinks the delay could be due to the change in the weather, the alcohol that I consumed over the weekend, the emotion of the surprise party that I still can't get over...In any case, she's not trying to bring me down, she doesn't scold me and her kindness helps to sooth my worries a little. Before leaving, she dries my tears, kisses my cheek tenderly and gives me a little sympathetic smile.

"It'll come tomorrow, I'm sure of it!"
