Soledad jolted when River closed the door. Fighting tears, she dashed up the stairs. She was breathless when she reached the apartment. Conflicting feelings warred in her chest. Maybe she wouldn’t have to decide. Her stomach knotted with tension. She inhaled slowly. Once River started playing with the team again, he wouldn’t come back. He wouldn’t have time. The children would be disappointed. She would be disappointed, but she’d go back to the way she’d been before River showed up at her door, looking strong and handsome, with boxes of donated football equipment. Before she met River, she focused on Kalida, her school and her students, but she’d never forget looking into the chiseled features that scooped air from her lungs.

When River would stop coming to the school, her life wouldn’t be as before. Nothing could be the same, because River Jackson had come into her life.

She could hardly catch her breath. When River left, the memories would live inside her forever.
