Chapter 10

Once they were all on board, Pete steered them out of the dock. They boated slowly and steadily out into the ocean until the view of the harbor was swallowed by the endless blue horizon. As the boat sloughed through the water, Trent spent most of the time explaining the concept of virtual reality technology to Malea. Through Malea’s deft questions, R.J. came to learn that the newest project was actually virtual technology software to help doctors perform complex surgeries with the virtual assistance of specialists anywhere in the world. It was inspired by Trent’s accident, and how he was sure that his mother might have survived if they hadn’t had to helicopter her to a L.A. for a surgery because there was no specialist at the hospital where they were.

VonHiller Enterprises had been working on a similar type of software, but Trent and Mark wanted to more or less give their product away. No wonder her stepfather was angry, R.J. smiled. He’d probably already invested a fortune in research and development, and not Mark and Trent had their own, likely superior solution, and had no interest in making a profit. Malea was impressed to, and R.J. watched with a mix of shock and pleasure as her best friend gently flirted with Trent. Louisa, for her part, kept herself buried in a book about astrophysics and then wandered off to the other side of the yacht.

“Is she okay?” Malea asked.

Trent watched her go. “She’s fine. I’m surprised she came, she has a big project due.” He looked back at R.J. “I think it was just to keep an eye on you. She still thinks you’re up to something. VonHillers always are.”

R.J. watched Louisa as she disappeared down into the cabin below deck. Malea’s stomach rumbled, much to her embarrassment and Trent stood up and announced they were going to eat lunch now. He began unpacking the picnic baskets.

“I thought we were waiting for the island?” Malea said. “You said you had it all planned out.”

Trent shrugged. “Carpe Diem when your beautiful guest is hungry.”

Malea nodded and popped a strawberry into her mouth. “Thanks!”

R.J. stood up and walked over to the side of the boat, ostensibly to stretch her legs, but also to give the lovebirds a little privacy. Malea would get more than enough info on her own. She headed up to the captain’s cabin to talk more with Pete, but she was surprised to find it was empty. She glanced down at the control board. The computer screen that usually reported the boat’s location and destination was shut down, the screen black. She glanced out at the horizon and noted that the boat seemed to be drifting. She went back down the steps, past the obliviously flirting Trent and Malea, and down into the bottom cabin, where Louisa had disappeared to.

She found Pete and Louisa in the middle of an exchange, Louisa’s face red. Pete’s eyes looked up at R.J. with a strange look. R.J.’s entrance seemed to have caught them both off guard.
