We were having breakfast on the hotel balcony. Croissants and freshly squeezed orange juice, the smell of freshly roasted coffee reminding me that it was the simple things in life that were the best. Freshly squeezed orange juice, fresh coffee, combined with the company of one of the most beautiful girls in the world? Life didn’t get much better.

“So,” said Suzie, inhaling the smell of her cup, “do you always have a room waiting for you here? And if so, how often do you stay?”

“To answer both: yes, if I’m doing a work event here. And rarely, because we don’t have that many events, thankfully.”

“Thankfully,” she said as she chewed thoughtfully. “How the zero point one percent live huh?”

“I guess. Is the fact that I don’t consider five star hotels a big deal going in your article?”

“I’m not sure,” she said, taking a bite of her croissant.

Women weren’t supposed to look this good when they ate, but when she did it looked playful, carefree and somehow sexy.

“I just hope I come across well. You know my experience with journalists hasn’t been great so far.”

“Awwww, you poor baby.” She leaned over and dabbed her finger on my nose. “I just hope I can restore your faith in journalism? It’s a heck of a task, but I think I can do it.”

I smiled as I watched her pour some more coffee. I rarely did long ‘mornings after’, but I was happy to make an exception. And as I watched her, I realized that seeing her happy, made me happy. I tried to think of a time when that had happened before, but couldn’t remember one.

“So today…” I began, only for her to hold her finger up.

“Uh uh,” she said, “you’ve been organizing too much mister. No more helicopters, fancy dresses and hotel suites.”

She looked around.

“Today I’m going to pick what we do.”

“I was thinking that I’d have to go to work.”

“On a Saturday? Nuh uh, you need a break. You need to live a little. Besides, you definitely need to take it easy after your efforts last night.”

She gave me a cheeky smile.

“I suppose work can wait, I guess. So what are we doing?”

“Get showered and get dressed. I’ll show you.”

“Get dressed? But I only have my tuxedo.”

“Hmmmm, good point. We’re both getting taxis to our places, then meeting in Central Park.”

“Okay,” I said, still not sure what I was signing myself up for.

A few hours later Suzie and I were in Central Park, looking at our surroundings. The sun beat down on the beautiful colors, and not for the first time, it reminded me what a kick-ass city I lived in. I wasn’t sure what Suzie had planned. And I don’t think I’d ever been on a date that I hadn’t been responsible for organizing.

We walked with the reservoir on our right, a still blue sheet sat in the middle of the lungs of New York. It seemed especially still today, the sun reflecting off the water’s surface. The park seemed like our own little oasis of calm in a bustling city.
