YOU’VE GOT TO BE SOLID ON EVERY LEVEL
Being solid in all areas of your life really does make a difference. Imagine a wheel made out of chain links. Let’s say in one area of your life, you are very honest and doing everything in a certain way, but then in another area of your life (your family or your partner), you are treating things differently, maybe being a little less honest. At some point there is going to be so much tension on one of those links that it breaks, and things aren’t going to flow easily anymore.
It’s a simple way of looking at life, but it’s true. A guy who is a very powerful C.E.O. might not think he has time to eat well or exercise, so he eats fast food and drinks high-sugar drinks for energy all day. He works his ass off and makes hundreds of millions, and then he finds out he has cancer. Chances are his lifestyle may have had something to do with it. Now he has to take time off work for treatment, and he has to overhaul his eating habits and exercise. His life is clutching at straws, and there’s no limit to the amount of money he’d pay to get it back in order.
I know guys who are so obsessed about fitness that it prevents them from having a healthy relationship. The key is that you have to put in the same kind of positive and intentional energy across multiple paths. If there is an area that is lacking, when it breaks down—and it will—it will bring down everything else with it.
We see this happen far too often with professional athletes. A team might have a star player who has incredible speed and amazing strength. But he also has a terrible temper and he’s arrested a few times and loses a high-dollar contract (or two). Pretty soon his teammates begin to see his shitty attitude as a distraction and there’s dissention in the locker room. You can see how a guy like this can bring the whole team down because they’re so reliant on him in one area, but as a team they’re not working. The guy is talented, for sure, but his unbalanced life makes him more of a nuisance than a benefit to the team.
Many of my mentors have talked to me about how important it is to be solid in all areas of life. “Before you become a good athlete, you have to become a good person first.” It’s so true, and I’d extend that not only to athletes but to all careers and goals. You can’t expect to be successful for long as an amazing athlete, or a high-powered lawyer, or an entrepreneur who is really making a difference if you are an asshole to everyone you come in contact with.
Of course, there are people who are assholes who appear to be successful, and it’s frustrating when we see it, but know that something will always catch up with them down the track.
