A Lot to Drink

The distant sound of people going about their morning routines eventually woke Kathryn. She flopped over in the king-sized bed to lay on her back.

Her brain thrummed with a post-alcohol haze. She squinted at the ceiling, struggling to piece her memories together.

Where am I? she wondered. And how much did I drink?

Suddenly she sat up in bed, clutching the sheet to her naked chest in shock.

“Shit!”

Total recollection of the previous evening came to her like a tsunami crashing against her frontal lobe. She brought her other hand up to hold her head. She winced.

“Shit,” she muttered again.

She had kissed Jenn Cook. She’d tried for much more, too. While she had claimed it was intended to be an innocent goodnight kiss, it was anything but.

She swallowed hard. Pain in her head pulsated like a siren. This wasn’t just a hangover, this was a hangover and outright shock.

“What am I doing?” she muttered to herself. “I’m not gay. I’m not.”

It even sounded weak to her own ears. She got out of bed and grabbed the white hotel-issued dressing gown and tossed it around her body. She walked over to the mirror and stared at her reflection.

“I am not gay.”

She regarded herself in the mirror for a few silent moments before adding, “So why did you kiss a woman?”

Her reflection stared back at her in confusion. “And why can’t you get her out of your head?”

She blew out a breath. No answer was forthcoming, because she didn’t have one. It was as if she were a completely different person when she was around Jenn.

She tilted her head to one side. “I’ve… been under a lot of stress.”

She walked over to the coffee machine, selected a pod, and placed it in the top of the device. “I’m in a strange city, alone. And lonely.” She started the machine and walked into the bathroom, switching on the light.

“I’m confused… and suffering from… from emotional loss.” She looked at her reflection, this one less flattering with the bright bathroom lights glaring at her. She blew out a long sigh.

“And I’d had a lot to drink.”

She rubbed at her eyes before reaching into her toiletry bag and pulling out a packet of pain medication. She’d been through a lot lately, but that was no reason to take it out on Jenn.

She’d simply had the misfortune of being one of the very few people who had shown Kathryn some kindness lately. And Kathryn had repaid her by getting startlingly drunk and sending the most enormous of mixed signals. She wasn’t gay, but for some reason she couldn’t be trusted around Jenn Cook.

The coffee machine finished whirring, and she walked back into the main room. She picked up the cup and placed it down on the desk beside the hotel directory.

Panic coursed through her body.

Jenn would be coming to the hotel today to teach a water aerobics class. Kathryn lunged for the directory and hurriedly flipped through the pages. She quickly found the activities list and ran a shaking finger down the page.
