LOGAN ENTERED THE Pascua Realty office on Kinoole Street. He was immediately approached in the spacious, carpeted suite by a tall, slender man in his early thirties with dark hair in a windblown bob. The man was dressed in sleek, business-casual clothing. “Hi, I’m Henry Pascua,” he said. “You must be Detective Ryder?”

“Yes.” Henry extended an angular hand and Logan shook it warily, having spoken to him briefly over the phone and not gotten a good read on him as the boyfriend of the missing woman.

“Why don’t we step into my office?”

Logan followed him through the lobby and to a door that led to a good-sized office with modern furniture and a picture window. Without asking him to sit, Henry said tentatively, “You wanted to talk to me about Kakalina, or Kat, as she prefers, which is short for the non-Hawaiian variant of Katherine...”

“As I explained to you over the phone, Kakalina was reported missing by her parents,” Logan said, standing flat-footed. “Do you know anything about that?”

“Wish I did.” Henry lifted his chin. “The truth of the matter is Kat and I broke up last week.”

Logan regarded him with misgiving. “And why was that?”

“She was into another dude,” he said straightforwardly. “I don’t like competing for a girl’s affections, no matter how hot she is. Especially when she made it clear it was over between us.”

Logan tried to decide if being dumped by her had made Henry angry enough to do her harm. Or did it merely free him to move on with someone else? “What do you know about the other guy?”

Henry shrugged. “Not much. Only that they met at a club and he got her a part-time gig playing hula music at the mall.”

“Which mall would that be?”

“The Prince Kuhio Plaza.”

“Do you happen to know his name?” Logan asked, wondering if this was the same person Kakalina had gone out with last night. Or could it have been one of her other male friends?

Henry ran a hand across the top of his head. “No, sorry. She never bothered to tell me.”

Logan frowned and became curious. “Did Kakalina—or Kat—ever go missing when you were together?”

“Yeah, you could say that.” He snickered. “When we were together, one time we flew over to Kauai and spent the night without telling her folks. They went nuts. Guess she managed to smooth things over with them when we got back.”

Logan wondered if Kakalina could have decided to go island hopping again with another man. They would check into that. “According to her parents, Kat’s only friends were men.”

Henry wrinkled his nose. “Yeah, that seems about right. I knew that going in, but we seemed to hit it off, so I looked past her always wanting to be the center of attention with every guy who looked her way.”

“Do you think any of them might have wanted to harm her?” Logan asked, an edge to his tone of voice.

Henry shook his head, maybe a little too quickly for Logan. “I know
