Paul has offered the gospel to the Jews first. Now he takes his message to the Gentiles. He is greatly encouraged by a vision in which the Lord speaks to him and promises to protect him. As a result, Paul decides to stay on in Corinth for a year and a half.

During this time, Paul’s Jewish enemies try to get rid of him. They bring him before the proconsul Gallio and charge him with breaking religious law. The Romans allow Judaism, but surely not this strange worship of Christ!

Gallio is the younger brother of the Stoic philosopher Seneca. He is handsome, intelligent – and nobody’s fool. He recognizes the spite and nit-picking of the Jews, refuses to hear any more from them – and throws them out.

This is a momentous decision. Gallio’s ruling means that Christianity is accepted as a proper religion under Roman law. The crowd which has gathered to mob Paul gives the new synagogue ruler a beating instead.

Paul’s travels

When the time comes for Paul to leave Corinth, he makes a vow and shaves his head. This could be out of gratitude for his long period of safety, or a commitment to his future work.

Paul sails with Aquila and Priscilla to Ephesus, where he teaches for a short time in the synagogue. He leaves his friends there, promising to return. He will travel 1,500 miles before he sees them again (18:18–22).

From Ephesus, Paul sails to Caesarea, the main port of Palestine. From there he goes ‘up’ to Jerusalem and then ‘home’ to Antioch – the base from which both his missionary journeys began.

Living by faith

Paul lives by faith – but this doesn’t stop him earning his living. Jesus was a carpenter, and all Jewish rabbis have an occupation. If a person or church is willing to support Paul, he gladly accepts, and gives all his time to his gospel work. If not, then he readily supports himself.
