Brody was a little worried that after all his fine talk in the front yard, Having a Big Relationship Talk was going to be really arcane and complicated and require breaks to look up how to have a big relationship talk on the internet. He’d read some things, but it wasn’t like he’d ever tried to have a mature grownup relationship before. He didn’t get the sense that Nick had either.

But it turned out to just mean curling up with Nick on one of the couches in the little sunken half-den, both of them minus their shoes and shirts so they could have some skin contact. Nick started them off by saying, “So, uh, after action, right? That’s what we called it in the Marines. Go over what happened, what we fucked up, how to do it better next time.”

Brody nodded quickly. Maybe Nick did kind of know what they were doing here.

“I, uh—hey, seriously, congratulations on the job, you’re gonna be awesome at it,” Nick said, pressing his cheek into Brody’s shoulder.

Brody smiled, recapturing a little of the giddy happiness of Hector’s phone call. “Yeah, man, I am. But stay focused. You heard, and you got upset, because...?”

“Um, because I’m an unemployed non-genius crazy person?” Nick waved one hand like that was self-evident.

“I think the correct term is veteran coping with post-traumatic stress disorder,” Brody said firmly. “But okay, yeah, it made you feel bad. Plus we were having kind of a moment and it was important and I just took off on you like that didn’t matter.”

Nick tensed a little, like that moment they’d been having was scarier than any of it. Brody rubbed his nose into Nick’s hair.

“Yeah, okay, also that,” Nick agreed. “And I—I don’t know, I needed to act like I could be fine too. Put on clothes. Wash the sheets. Be a fuckin’ person.”

Brody nodded. “So what could I have done that would’ve been more helpful when I came back and saw you were upset? Should I let you calm down on your own? I thought—walking away was part of the problem, so walking away again wouldn’t have helped.”

Nick squirmed, frowning, and said hesitantly, “Maybe... shift? I don’t think I could’ve gotten mad at wolf-you, and I probably would’ve shifted too.”

“And then we could have snapped at each other and knocked each other down if we needed to,” Brody agreed, picturing it. “But you would’ve been...”

Nick exhaled, melting a little against Brody, like just the thought of being wolf-shaped was helping him calm down. “Yeah. I guess I... yeah. I just work better like that sometimes. Sorry.”

“What’s to be sorry about, man?” Brody shook him a little. “You’re a werewolf. I’m a werewolf. We’re literally magic. Why not use it if it helps?”

Nobody’s gonna smack you on the nose for it, Brody didn’t say. Not on my watch.

Nick nodded but didn’t say anything, and stayed curled around so he didn’t have to meet Brody’s eyes. Brody tried to figure out if there was more
