Chapter Twenty One

“You know, this latte stuff isn't bad at all,” Marge said, taking another sip from the glass cup in her hand.

“It's just a milky coffee,” Lil said, grinning.

“Well, if your little barista had told me that then I wouldn't have spent almost five bucks on the thing,” said Marge, putting the glass on the counter. She sniffed. “Got any recommendations for me?”

Lil twisted her mouth into a moue of thought. “What are you in the mood for?” she asked, finally.

“Eugh, something that reminds me that life isn't always cold.”

Lil looked out of the store window. The bright autumn was passing. It was gray outside, the light muted, and spiraling flakes of snow were attempting to build up into something more substantial.

“Right you are,” she said. She had just the thing. She went to the fiction section and pulled out a book with a cover in all the colors of the sunset. “Here,” she said, handing the book to Marge. “Takes place in Malibu, mostly at the beach, it's all hot and sunny with a bunch of family drama thrown in for good measure.”

“Perfect,” said Marge, contentedly. She put the book on the counter. “So, things going swimmingly then, I see.”

Lil glanced over at the café, where a handful of people were sitting drinking coffee and reading. A small ball of pleasure gathered in her stomach. This was the dream, this was what she'd wanted. She nodded and Marge grunted.

“I wasn't after a share-holder meeting,” Marge said. “I've got eyes in my head, I can see that business is booming. What about Riley Winters?”

“She's doing well, out of hospital, recovering. The doctor says she should be able to come to work on Monday as long as she doesn't do any heavy lifting.”

Marge growled this time. “I swear to all that's holy that I will haunt you for the rest of your days Liliana Bradley. You know damn well that that's not what I want to hear. Tell me the real news.”

Lil leaned over, her elbows on the counter. “No news.”

“Nothing?” Marge asked. “I'm disappointed in you. I thought you'd woman up and ask the girl out.”

“It's not through lack of trying,” Lil said. “Riley's been through a lot. We're talking. Things are moving slowly. She doesn't need any pressure right now.”

“It was only appendicitis,” grumbled Marge, picking up her coffee cup again.

Lil wasn't going to tell the town gossip any more than that. Riley's secrets were her own. In truth, though she'd visited Riley every day, there'd been no more talk of any kind of relationship. On the good days, Lil thought that Riley was waiting until she was back on her feet to discuss things and decide. On the bad days, she figured that Riley didn't know how to tell her she was leaving so she was saying nothing instead.

“She'll be back at work on Monday,” Lil said again. “And while we're busy asking personal questions, there's something that's been bugging me.”

“Oh yeah?” Marge arched an eyebrow over her coffee cup.
