Chapter 7: The Crystal Gazer

BOTH rickshaws stopped. While Dr. Strang climbed heavily out of his, Karen scrambled down. When the doctor reached her, she was kneeling in the mud, regardless of the fact that it would soil her dress. She had Bill Montgomery’s head in her hands, was frantically tugging at him, shaking him, hysterically repeating his name.

If Susan could have seen her then, she would have realized that there were moments when the jade lady could lose her poise, when the glaze of her self-possession seemed to be fractured.

Her husband took her hysteria as a matter of course, as if he was aware that she was infatuated with this handsome romantic. He did not appear to care in the least.

Bill Montgomery’s face was as white as death. His eyes were closed. There was an ugly, rather deep cut on the left side of his forehead from which blood darkly pulsed. The doctor examined his eyes, pushed his hysterical wife away, and placed his ear to the young man’s chest.

He lifted his head and said, “He’s been knocked out. He must have been with Susan.”

The doctor placed his thumbs at the base of the young man’s brain, encircled his throat with his thin, surgeon’s fingers, as if he planned to strangle him. His wife watched him with frightened blue eyes. But Dr. Strang did not strangle the young man. He felt about the base of his skull with his thumbs for a moment, then sharply pressed.

As if, with a knowledge of dark magic, he had pressed upon the very nerve of life, he caused Bill Montgomery’s eyes to pop open. The young man groaned, took one deep breath, then another. He stared at Karen, then at Dr. Strang. He tried to get to his feet. The doctor helped him up. Bill Montgomery dashed the blood from his left eye with the back of his hand, and gasped, “They got her!” He swayed.

Dr. Strang said sharply, “Get hold of yourself! What happened?”

“Susan telephoned my room. She said she was leaving — wanted me to take her down to the landing stages.”

“Which one? — Which one?”

“She didn’t say.”

“Didn’t she say where she was going?”

“No. We started down. We got this far. A gang of men in blue masks came swarming out of that road. They grabbed her. I tried to fight. One of them hit me in the head with something.”

“Where did they take her?”

“I don’t know.” He was panting. “Good God, aren’t there any police, in this part of the city? — I’m going —”

“Wait a minute,” Dr. Strang stopped him. “You’ll only get yourself into hot water if you go to the police. What can they do?”

“Somebody,” the young man said frantically, “must do something!”

“Yes,” Dr. Strang agreed. “You will come back to the hotel with us and I will clean and bandage that hole in your head.”

“Who could they have been?”

“You must remember, Bill, that Susan is one of the richest women in the world. And that this is China.
