Take a 15 inch (38 cm) length of 1" by ¼" (2.5 x 0.5 cm) flat bar and heat a long section of the tip, about 6 inches (15 cm), to an orange color temperature. You will need to use tongs for this exercise—the tongs should securely hold the flat stock by its edges, not by its width.

Place the heated portion, edge up, on the soft radius of the far side of the anvil or the horn, and hammer the tip downward.

You should notice that the metal wants to bend where there is the least amount of resistance—on the width planes. Alternating your hammer blows from the edge to the face of the stock will help keep distortions from getting out of hand.

Sharper bends require a smaller length of orange heat. As the flat stock begins to bend, try to avoid any direct hammer blows on the outer edges of the stock material. When you alternate blows to the face of the stock, you will need to flatten outward the compressed area that accumulates on the inside of the bend.
