Three is the unfinished number. It is energy and dynamism and involvement. In stories it provides the patterns which keep us reading, like the waltz with its triple beat which keeps us dancing. There is the beginning, the middle and the end; and the middle, too, may be divided into three parts to give the five stanzas of the ballad, or the classical five-act structure. Three is the smallest number with which we can establish a pattern. It shows us the pattern but it doesn’t rub our faces in it. It suggests and it invites. It asks us to believe. Triple repetitions are the established technique behind speeches which stir our emotions, for as the Bellman says, “What I tell you three times is true”. The ballad gives an example of one of these Snarkist arguments:
