Footnotes

1 You are ever so welcome.

2 A gross misjudgment of my character. I will have you know I have engaged in exactly two and a half battles, and thrice sustained severe paper cuts that took weeks to heal. Not to mention my missing spleen.

TWENTY-EIGHT

ELLIE

THE GREAT HALL WAS ABUZZ WITH WHISPERS. IT HAD filled up during the autumnal break with terrified-looking draftees, ready to complete their trials and prove their worth as Knights of the Round Table. But beyond that, the room seemed… electric.

It was their first day back in class, and Ellie felt as though giant beanstock beans bounced in her stomach.

On the other side of the autumnal equinox, the clock ticked faster and faster to her blood debt deadline. It led to dreams of mystical swords hidden in stone, identical to Excalibur in every way, except free for her to steal, unattached to the knights and their twisted fates.

And then there were the attacks on Caedmon. Who would want to capture him? And how did the Anguisar soldier escape?

Dame Gwendolyn had been most unhelpful when he recounted the tale.

Lorelei, self-proclaimed excellent spy, overheard their head knight mention Croven’s attempts to infiltrate Iselkia when discussing the lupinsfang.

The thought chilled Ellie’s bones to their core.

Last year, they awoke ancient Iselkian magic that had been lying dormant for hundreds of years. Magic known as the Deep. Powerful enough to bring cities to ruin, to unleash another plague, to shatter the very realms.

Perhaps Croven believed the time had come for her to claim it.

But how did that relate to the lupinsfang, the Anguisar, or the prince?

“I’ve been thinking.”

Ellie jumped as Caedmon plopped down beside her.

Omari passed him a plate of crepes. “Try the laplie crepe; it’s amazing.”

Ellie blinked, dazed. She’d been so lost to her own musings she hadn’t noticed Omari and Lorelei join her. And if she was too distracted for Omari, saints knew she had a problem.

Caedmon absentmindedly piled crepes onto his plate. “We need to go to Sehira.”

Omari choked on his breakfast.

Lorelei, busy filing her nails, slowly looked up at them from her thick lashes. “Why, exactly, do you want to spend time with scoundrels?”

That same determined gleam Ellie caught in Caedmon’s eyes after watching Jessiba’s horrific vision blazed in them now. “Because if I look like I’m searching for the bloodstone there, maybe we can get whoever is also searching for it to come find me. Just like at the Crystal Palace.”

Ellie frowned. “But didn’t Jessiba say the princess already looked in Sehira?”

“Yeah, but whoever tried to kidnap me won’t know I know that. They clearly tracked me to the Crystal Palace, but they wouldn’t try and get me here. I have to get away from the academy. If we find out who’s after me and corner them, we can figure out what else they know about the bloodstone.”

They all gave Caedmon uneasy looks.

Caedmon leaned forward. Ellie had never seen him so determined. “We already know Malgwyn’s clues, right?”

Ellie nodded slowly. “The bloodstone lies with those who are gone, with those who shall come again.
