Chapter Fourteen

TRANAE peered around the lab they were in. Caleb was not only capable of teleporting himself, he could carry passengers. He took them from the airport and popped them here about twenty minutes ago. It took her most of that time to stop vomiting. A few saltines and a ginger ale later, she still felt ill.

She sat on a stool that was pulled from under a large lab table, twisting the saltines pack in her hand. She had no idea where she was or even what time zone she was in. All Tranae knew was, at some point, she stepped into the Twilight Zone.

Tranae shook her head to dismiss her thoughts of fantasy and fiction in an attempt to stay in the here and now. She focused on the conversation at hand, even though she had no clue what the discussion between a man who she thought was a doctor, and a woman who she thought was a scientist, was about.

“The device that is attached to Cianne is made to inhibit her abilities. It is unlike any we’ve seen before. We know nothing of its effects on her. An experiment was performed using Caleb and an enhanced version of an inhibitor that was confiscated by one of our Sentry Guards,” the man named Bannerman said. “I feel that the results aren’t typical.”

“The device could hardly contain...” The scientist, a middle-aged woman, nervously looked over at Caleb then to Bannerman. She cleared her throat then seemed to realize she stopped talking. “The device could inhibit Caleb’s abilities for half an hour before I had to replace it. We have to take into account that he is mentally and physically healthy. According to reports, our Sovereign is experiencing sleep deprivation and severe depression.”

Tranae frowned as she gave the female scientist her full attention. The woman had perfect mocha-toned skin, beautiful hair and... Oh heck, she’s just perfect. Like Tranae, the woman was either scared of Caleb or totally entranced by his hotness. Either way, Tranae could tell it took the woman some effort to stop staring at him.

“If she is being influenced by any other factors, those along with the advanced tech of the inhibitor may extend the effects on her. What I am sure of, by studying Caleb...” she paused, “is that her body will ultimately attack and destroy any foreign invaders, even in her weakened and distracted state. Someone has to be replacing the inhibitor regularly to maintain her weakened state. We can counter that by introducing these.”

Tranae focused on the glass vial that looked like fine granules of sugar. What are they going to do with sugar?

Bannerman reached for the vial and held it in the air. He looked at the contents closely then offered the container back to the woman, but Caleb reached for it before the woman could. The woman quickly pulled her hand back before Caleb could touch her, letting him grab the vial.

Tranae didn’t see Caleb, who was beside her, move; she doubted anyone else did either because the tension in the room definitely raised a notch.
