A man stepped into the middle of the square, his arms raised for quiet.

“Beasts and humans, I am the referee of this special event!” he yelled in a booming voice. “The Dragon Games are about to begin.”

The crowd stomped their feet and hollered. The referee had to wait until the noise died down before continuing.

He pointed to where Luca and his friends were hovering. “On my left, we have the Outsiders.”

There was a pause, then the crowd clapped politely.

“Lots of them want us to win,” Zane said softly. “They’re just too afraid of Dartsmith to show it.”

A hush fell over the crowd and the air felt cooler. A murmur rose on the opposite side of the town square. Then the crowd parted and a thin figure stalked through: a boy with a pointed nose and extremely blue eyes. Dartsmith. Luca heard Yaz draw in a sharp breath. Even Zane seemed to tense up. A black cape billowed as he made his way to the center. He held a huge, shiny sword. It was covered in gleaming buttons and cruel-looking hooks.

“And on my right,” the referee bellowed, “is our leader, Dartsmith!”

The crowd cheered much louder this time, but Luca caught glimpses of flame-colored cloth being waved. They definitely had supporters down there.

“To win this battle, you must not only stay off the ground,” the referee continued, “you must also win THREE points against your opponent.”

A loud buzzing sound filled the air, and the sky grew darker. A mass of drones flew over the crowd. They headed straight to Dartsmith and began rapidly clipping together. Soon, a platform made from drones had formed. Dartsmith stepped calmly onto it and the mega-drone rose up into the air. The sound of its many mechanical wings buzzing was horrible.

Luca couldn’t help noticing: Every single drone had a point that was bigger and sharper than Luca’s pathetic sword.
