Eddie dragged himself from Mary’s embrace, not knowing which he feared more: letting her go, or being incapable of letting her go. Ever. He knew this was impossible. Somehow he must convince her of that, and convince himself as well.

He gently tugged her arms from his neck.

“Mary, there is nothing I’d rather do that spend every free moment with you—”

“Very well, then! I’d like that too. I’m not a typical mild Mary,” she said with a laugh that was as mesmerizing as her kiss had been. “If I thought we might be doing something outside God’s approval, that would be another matter entirely. But why would God object to our caring for one another?”

He moved outside their embrace, taking two steps back—as far away as the narrow shelter allowed. She obviously didn’t see the extent of the problem, so he pointed to the shoes he’d made for her. “You can’t even wear those if you want the town to accept you. I made them for your morning walks, out here where no one will see them. Doesn’t that tell you something? I already care for you, Mary. Enough to want to spare you from the kind of treatment I get.”

Her smile barely dimmed, even as she put a hand on his shoulder. “I admit I don’t understand the attitudes of the people here. But I don’t think the Babineaus would treat me any differently.”

“They will if your grandfather says anything about it.”

She was smiling broadly again, and it was all he could do not to be caught up in her optimism. “Then we’ll have to change his mind, won’t we?”
