Chapter 4
The sun started to set in the sky, turning their little home dark. Chris had fallen asleep as soon as she sat on the couch alone in the silence. She looked around and sighed. The house was old and cold and very dirty. Most of it would need to be fixed with a little hard work and patience.
What couldn’t be fixed was the location of a lake behind the back porch. When Chris grew up a little, he’d be able to jump straight into the lake during the summer. He’d have fun here, and he’d be safe. Dense trees covered the hilly landscape, giving them privacy they desperately needed. Even though Delphine was slowly learning her way around the area, she knew she was going to get lost. Finding this place would be next to impossible until she knew the roads better.
Hopefully next time I won’t walk into weird gang stuff, she thought.
Sitting on the couch was quickly becoming uncomfortable. Her skin was tingling from the itchy fabric of her work uniform, and her legs were going numb from the weight of her son’s body leaning into her bones.
Beneath Chris’s body, she slipped her fingers up his back and took hold of him tightly. Delphine didn’t want to wake him up. She’d had a rough couple of days, and they could both use an early night.
Delphine took her time rising from the couch. The last thing she wanted to do was wake him. He was so peaceful and sweet while he was asleep. If he woke up now, he’d be none of those things. Delphine kept her footsteps light as she slowly walked across the living space.
The door to her bedroom was right ahead. All she needed to do was get to the handle and twist it open. Chris’s crib was right inside.
I’ll set him down, she thought, feeling her stomach churn in excitement for her alone time. I could have a bath, drink some tea…
Delphine opened the door as quietly as she could, biting on her bottom lip as she stared down at Chris’s face. He didn’t even stir as she moved through into the bedroom.
She took it slowly, stepping purposefully as she moved across the room. When Chris was safely in his crib, she tucked him in with the baby monitor above his head. Delphine sighed.
Nothing in the world brought her as much joy as looking down on his face. Even though her whole body ached, and her eyes would barely stay open, all she wanted to do was stand there and watch over him all night long.
Come on, Delphine thought. Time to get some sleep.
The idea of having a bath, or even making a cup of tea, sounded too much for her to handle. If she could get a good night’s sleep, everything would right itself.
Delphine stripped off her clothes and climbed under the sheets. Her eyes instantly got heavier, drooping closed as she adjusted the pillow beneath her head.
Tomorrow would bring her new problems, as only retail did, as well as having to part with her darling boy for another couple of hours.
