Chapter 5

Ryan shifted right after Heather did, not caring that he was ripping his favorite shirt and his best pair of hiking pants in the process. All he cared about at that moment was finding Heather.

But though he searched the woods for hours, there was barely a trace of her. Her scent, of vanilla and paper, was only barely perceptible even to his heightened senses. She seemed to have simply vanished, and obviously didn’t want to be found.

So, Ryan waited until dark and then reluctantly trudged back to the beach, shifted back into his human form and packed up the sad remnants of their romantic picnic. There were no park rangers around to witness his dejected, naked human self dragging his feet back to his Jeep, throwing his pack in the backseat and hunching behind the wheel, thankfully. At least there was some consolation in that.

Ryan replayed the day in his head as he drove home down the darkened Alameda Avenue, the street deserted since it was well past eight o’clock on a cold autumnal evening. The date had all been going so well, and then it had reached new heights of awesome after that kiss. Something had changed between them after their lips had met. It had felt almost seismic in its intensity, like as their bodies moved closer, the tectonic plates had shifted beneath them, the earth realigning itself to make room for the sheer force of their connection.

And seeing Heather in her true form had been even more affecting. She was beautiful, majestic, an ursine goddess, and Ryan had been trying to get the words together to tell her as much when she’d run.

Maybe she’s home now, Ryan thought as he got out of the car and slung his bag over his shoulder. Her store was only a few streets over from his apartment building. He could pop over and just make sure she got home safely. If she were still roaming the woods in her bear form, he’d leave her to it, of course, but if she was back home in her human form, maybe he could get her to talk to him, and he could explain just how much he admired her, wanted her, needed her.

Ryan’s phone buzzed just as he was beginning his walk down the street toward the bookstore. He looked down at the screen and saw that it was a message from the group chain between him and the other guys in his clan. They wanted to know how the date had gone.

Rather than spend precious time putting thumb to screen, Ryan opted for a voice message, giving the guys a brief overview of the day, the good and the bad, while he continued walking. No sooner had he sent the message off, however, then his phone buzzed. And buzzed again. And again.

It seemed that every guy in his clan was typing various versions of “Abort! Abort! Do not go to her apartment!”

The most eloquent came from his friend Joel McManus, who said, “Give her time and space.
