"Is he sleeping now?" he asked when she walked out of her bedroom into the living room.

"Yes," she replied. "He must have had a really good time. It's the first time I've been able to get him to sleep so quickly. Thank you so much for today, Carl."

He gulped down the last few drops of the nightcap of whiskey and lemon she had made for him. "The pleasure was all mine," he said, dropping the glass and rising to his feet. "I can't wait for us to do this again."

At those words, a funny feeling fell over her. She said softly, "Carl, I like you. I really do. But I want you to know, this cannot be a regular thing. Right now, the only person in my life is my baby, and I want to keep it that way, at least for now." She deliberately stopped herself from mentioning her plan to leave Sherfield soon.

To her surprise, all he did was smile at her. Then he said, "I understand, Juliana. For now, I just wanna be friends."

"Yes, friends. Friends I can work with."

"Goodnight, Juliana." He turned to walk away.

"Wait," she heard herself say. Then she saw herself walk up to him. She wanted to give him a peck on the cheek, but even though he turned his cheek to receive it, something snapped in her the moment her mouth came close to his skin.

Juliana lost all control of her actions as she breathed in his intoxicating scent. She placed a hand on his jaw and gently turned his head to face hers. Their lips lingered millimeters from each other and then they came together.

Carl's lips were full and warm against hers. His arms came around her waist and pressed her soft body against his hard chest. She tasted his lips and by all the gods it was the sweetest thing she had ever tasted. Her mother involuntarily opened up to allow space for his wet tongue to explore. With her eyes closed, she heard the sudden noise of the front door opening, bringing her back to reality. Juliana let go of Carl looked to see who was at the doorway behind him.

"Reagan."

"Hello, Juliana. Howdy, Mr. Stevenson," Reagan said with a wide smile on his face.

Carl replied, "Evening, Reagan." He glanced at her, then back at her ex-husband and said. "I was just leaving."

"Oh, Okay. Goodnight," Reagan said.

"Goodnight, Juliana," Carl said. He walked past Reagan, albeit warily and closed the door behind him.

"It's late," Juliana said to Reagan.

"Sorry about that. I was here earlier, but no one was home. I just wanna take a look at John then I'll be gone."

She sighed. "He's in the bedroom. I just got him to sleep so be careful not to wake him."

"Thanks, dear. I'll be as quiet as a mouse." He flashed her that wide smile once more and walk to the bedroom.

Juliana frowned. Reagan appeared unaffected by the sight of her kissing the shifter who embarrassed him. That was unlike him. He was up to something - that she was sure of.
