A Difficult Choice

By Friday morning, All Hallow’s Eve, I know what I have to do. I get dressed, pulling on ripped skinny jeans and a long-sleeved green shirt. I pull on brown ankle boots and run a brush through my wavy hair before walking out of my room, leaving Zena snoring softly in her bed. I move downstairs to the main atrium, the first task on my list is to get my ceremonial robes from Ms. Gorman.

I spot her heading into her office and pick up my pace to catch up to her.

“Ms. Gorman,” I call out as she’s shutting her door.

She pauses, opening the door a little wider to see who has spoken to her.

“Miss Graves,” she greets me.

She looks weary as if she hasn’t slept much, and I wonder what has her feeling so stressed. I push the thought aside in favor of getting to the point of my visit.

“I was hoping to get my robes this morning,” I tell her.

She looks confused for a moment before her expression clears and she nods in understanding.

“Yes, right,” she says, “Robes. Blue for Ghostwalkers. Let’s see here.”

She walks over to a large wardrobe and opens the doors. Long garment bags hang inside, at least fifty of them. Ms. Gorman checks the tag marking the bags until she finds the one she’s looking for and pulls it from the rack.

“Here we are,” she says, handing it over to me, “You’re in for a real treat tonight, Miss Graves. Your first All Hallow’s Eve ceremony.”

“I’m looking forward to it, Ms. Gorman,” I tell her, only a little dishonest. I truly am looking forward to it, but not the slaughtering of the pig part. I could definitely do without that.

Ms. Gorman gives me her version of a warm smile before sending me on my way. Part of me wishes I could linger, putting off the more daunting task of the morning. Facing Finnick doesn’t sound appealing in the least right now. I sigh as I leave the main office and walk back to my dormitory to put away my robes. When I step inside, I see that Zena is already gone. I quickly hang the garment bag on my closet door before walking back out and heading for the dining hall.

Zena sits across from Finnick, both of them looking awkward after everything that’s happened lately. Zena is still angry with Finnick for kissing Twigg. I am too, frankly, and that’s why I have to have the conversation I’m dreading right now.

I approach the table and come to a stop next to them. They both look up at me expectantly, but I keep my attention on Finnick.

“Can we talk?” I ask him.

He sighs, a crestfallen look on his face as if he already knows what’s coming.

“Sure, Carson,” he says sadly, standing up and following me out the side door into the courtyard.

“I’ve given it a lot of thought,” I begin, “And I just don’t know how I can move past what happened between you and Twigg.
