“Here we go!” Lola pressed her earphones more closely onto her gray ears. “It finally gets interesting.”

Barnabas rubbed his stiff hands and looked at the rat with a mixture of worry and hope. They all did. Except for Sorrel, who was spreading out her mushrooms.

“Come on, rat!” she snapped while sniffing an especially big specimen. “What is the bug report?”

Lola was listening with a frown. “Eelstrom is talking about squid. But not the normal kind. The copperman has altered them like the wasps who chased me.” She listened again.

“Have you found out more about him by now?” Vita whispered to Twigleg.

The homunculus shook his head. “Gilbert and I checked all our sources. Just a few vague mentions of coppermen, without any details. It’s quite worrying, I have to say.”

“Lola, what about those squid?” Ben asked.

The rat was still listening, but finally she pulled the earphones off her head. “He gave them lobster claws.”

“Claws?” Barnabas went pale.

“Yep. To cut the pods off the Aurelia’s arms.”

“Curse him!” Barnabas let both his fists come down on the table so heavily that the bluelings stopped hammering underneath the porch. They were building quite a palace for themselves down there.

“Curse him, curse him, curse him!” Barnabas got up, and then sat down again with another curse. “This is exactly what we feared! Even if those squid don’t manage to steal the pods—the attempt alone will anger the Aurelia! And everything will be lost!”

Vita was still staring at the map, running her finger down the Aurelia’s predicted route. “Where are those squid now?”

Lola shook her head with a grim frown. “It sounds like they’re already quite close to the Aurelia.”

Vita looked at Barnabas. “We cannot just sit here and wait for her to arrive! What if it will be too late by then? We need to get out there—and warn Lizzie of the squid.”

“But how?” Guinevere asked. “We can’t dive that deep!”

“No?” Her mother got up, her face stiff with determination. “Well, I think I’ll have a talk with that leprechaun. After all, he seems to be friends with some selkies, right?”

Barnabas looked at her with alarm. “Oh no! No, Vita! I don’t like that idea, not at all.”

“What are they talking about?” Ben cast his sister a questioning look.

Guinevere gave him a wide smile.

“We just divided the tasks, brother. You all take care of the beach. Mom and I will take to the sea.”
