The twins’ history lessons were unlike what the usual nine-year-old learned in school. They learned about basic world events, of course, but their lessons included knowledge not known to the everyday person. They analyzed the economic, social, and political fallout from assassinations handled by both their family and others. Assassinations most of the world were unaware of.

“Why?” Cora asked.

“Why what?” Her mother Clara responded.

“Why this person? Why was this person targeted?”

“Our role is not to question why someone is targeted. Only to complete the assignment.” Sarah, the twins’ grandmother answered before Clara could speak. It was the mantra taught to every generation.

“But—”

“Just because we don’t question the reason,” Sarah interrupted, “doesn’t mean we don’t study the results. Much can be gained from this exercise. Not the least of which is how to prepare for possible future events.”

“Like revenge?” Katie asked.

“Or financial trends,” Cora added.

“Or wars?” Katie continued.

“Or cyber threats!” Cora exclaimed.

The girls went back and forth with each other. Sarah was astounded at what she was hearing. Katie’s thoughts were all coming from a warrior’s mindset. Cora’s from a different perspective altogether. Both were expressing thoughts and connections beyond their years. Yet within each comment, a little bit of the innocent child was revealed. She looked at her daughter-in-law who raised an eyebrow. Both were thinking future lessons needed a tune-up. The girls were progressing much faster than anticipated. As in an honors program in a public school, the material and difficulty levels would need to be adjusted upward.

“OK, let’s wrap this up. There are two names on the board. Each of you take one. You may choose between yourselves which one you take. Research them and tomorrow be prepared to tell us what occurred historically as the consequence of their deaths.”

Sarah ignored the groans she heard as she pushed the bottom board up and pulled down another one previously hidden. On it were several math and geometry problems.

“We’re going to work the math problems from the perspective of determining trajectory of a bullet from several distances.”

Katie sat up eagerly. Cora slumped in her seat.

Their mother smothered a smile as she waited for Sarah to begin the next lesson. As a top assassin in her day, Sarah was more than qualified to teach this lesson. Clara knew her children’s attitudes would reverse when she began the lesson that included computer programming problems. Having observed how Alexa and Alison’s inseparable bond grew then shrunk over the years, she was constantly amazed at how alike, yet different, her twins were. She wondered if the family had never fully understood the individuality of Alexa and Alison. It could explain their distress at the current state-of-affairs between the two. She vowed to support the loyalty between her girls while encouraging them both to be their own person. There was no question in her mind that between her three children and Ben’s twins, the future and prosperity of the next generation was all but assured. She wondered what role Alexa’s child would play in the mix.
