FORTY-ONE

Elias was walking Gregory Scott to his Leaf when Trevor Wharton came speeding up the hotel drive in a convoy of three Range Rovers. The man had impeccable timing. Even Elias had to give him that. He leapt out of the middle car and marched up to him with a warpath glint in his eye. ‘Your phone’s off,’ he said accusingly.

Elias gazed coolly at him. Wharton was a striking looking man, tall, lean and tanned, with large dark eyes, a strong nose and a powerful jaw, and with that trick that Elias had never even tried to master, of being able to emerge from a two hour car journey still immaculately turned out. Elias had known him for six years, and had got on well with him for the first four of those, when they’d both been on the fast track together. But Wharton had raced ahead since then, while Elias had stalled and fallen back. That was when he’d discovered that what he’d thought was friendship had actually merely been manoeuvring for advantage. ‘Is it?’ he frowned, taking it from his pocket to check. ‘Oh. Yes. So it is.’

‘So it is!’ mimicked Wharton, his breath misting in the gathering cold. ‘You did it on purpose.’

‘You’re absolutely right,’ admitted Elias, putting his hand on Gregory Scott’s arm. ‘I didn’t want to be disturbed while arresting the murderer of Dunstan Warne.’

Wharton gave a snort. ‘This?’ he said, looking Scott disdainfully up and down. ‘This is the murderer of Dunstan Warne?’

‘I demand to speak to my lawyer,’ declared Scott. ‘I refuse to say another word until I’ve spoken to my lawyer.’

‘He keeps telling me how he won’t say another word,’ said Elias cheerfully. ‘He won’t shut up about it. But he should have thought of that before spilling to his wife, because she just told us everything.’

‘His wife?’ asked Wharton. ‘Where is she?’

Elias nodded back at the barn. ‘WPC Quinn is with her, taking her statement.’

Wharton gestured to two of his men, who set off for the barn. Then he took Scott by his other arm. ‘Very well. We’ll take it from here.’

‘No need,’ said Elias, still holding Scott. ‘We’re doing fine all by ourselves, as you can see. And you’ve still got Grimsby to deal with, haven’t you? Unless you’ve already managed to eradicate the scourge of knife crime there once and for all, in which case kudos.’

Wharton flushed. ‘That’s enough,’ he said.

‘Enough for what?’

‘Enough for you to be off the case. You can’t be trusted any more.’

‘I can’t be trusted?’ retorted Elias.

‘You knew about the vault in the barn hours before you notified Mason,’ said Wharton. ‘Don’t even try to deny it. There were timestamps on your photographs. And one of Mason’s men saw you yesterday, out where those bodies were found, probing the ground with a metal stake. Yet no mention of that in your report. So I have to ask myself: why were you buying time? I have to ask myself: who were you buying it for?’

‘Fuck you,’ said Elias.
