CHAPTER ELEVEN
After the Queen had refused to accept her Prime Minister's resignation, he steadied himself, accepting the reality that he would serve out his term. No one in government knew of his offer and his increasing weariness in dealing with an unseen enemy. The Cobra conference suite fell silent as Bernard Jenkins finished his debriefing for the benefit of the two London detectives. Peters had sat bemused through the speech but Jim Brannigan had privately simmered.
'Is this the fucking twilight zone or what? Have you all gone loopers?'
'Excuse me Detective?' The Deputy Prime Minister asked, 'what did you just say?'
Jim let go of a deep breath, recalling his 1999 clash with the former SAS unit who had captured the public's imagination by killing gangsters, terrorists and child abusers. The elite trio had been mentored by high-ranking former police and army kingpins. He pushed back his chair and got to his feet.
'I asked if you bunch of James Bond fuckwits were living in the twilight zone?'
'How dare you!' His police commissioner responded standing up to face him. 'You will work with us Brannigan or I will have your pension.'
'Take it!'
'Never mind your pension, your family won't have a roof over their heads tonight if you cross us, detective,' the MI6 director added. 'And we can hold you for obstructing the course of justice.'
Brannigan walked over to the spook and spun his chair around. 'Just think of that word you just used . . . justice?'
The spy was about to stand up when the Prime Minister intervened.
'Detective, please retake your seat. Listen to what I have to say before you make any rash decisions.'
'What's to stop me going to the media and revealing this whole sordid affair? Why should I stay here, I have broken no laws?'
'Because I am the Prime Minister and I am asking you to hear me out. That's why and whether you like me or even voted for me . . . I am still head of the government.'
'Please Jim,' Peters said with a grimace, 'listen to what he has to say?'
'I can't believe what I have heard here tonight!' Jim scowled as he sat back into his chair. 'Task Force Black! Which of you Walter Mitty types thought up that beauty?'
'You have an ego problem Brannigan!' The Home Secretary said, 'I donât agree with this murderous unit but I follow orders . . . for the common good.'
The PM cleared his throat and glared at Jenkins who seemed genuinely shocked. He had thought his speech was rather eloquent and would appeal to the officer's sense of national pride.
'Do you agree in principle that we have to use every effort, every means at our disposal to catch the terrorists and prevent further carnage?'
'Every legitimate force, yes! But not these thugs . . . a former IRA bomber and a Russian deserter who interrogates people,' Jim was getting angrier by the second. 'Hold on a second . . . does the Queen and her family know about this shit?'
'No, only Cobra members know and only myself and the Prime Minister know of the unit's location.
