Chapter Thirty-Eight

Tasha had enjoyed working with explosives in school, up until the time where she was almost blown up herself.

After that, bomb-making had seemed a waste of time. She couldn’t see a situation where she’d use that kind of method to kill. She much preferred to be close-up. Then this situation with Darius came up, and she was glad she'd paid attention in class.

Eliminating Darius’ threat hadn’t been very satisfying, but it had been exciting. Tasha doubted she would use a bomb again but was glad to have that option available.

Arriving at home, she pulled into the driveway and sat a minute before going in. She was mentally running down the list in her head for the third time. She was sure that she'd taken care of everything.

Darius had provided her with a secure place to work. It was in the basement of an abandoned building. Tasha needed to build the two bombs, and she wasn’t about to do that at home. There were two because she couldn’t afford for something to go wrong and the device not to go off. She'd triggered them both, only needing one to work, but by the size of the blast, she was sure they’d both worked correctly.

After the explosion, she returned to the workspace and thoroughly cleaned it. She'd made sure to put plastic sheets over her work surfaces and wore gloves the whole time she was there.

Still, after removing everything, she sprayed down all the surfaces. Tasha was sure that bomb-sniffing dogs would still trigger if brought in, but short of burning the building, she’d done the best she could.

Once she was done, she’d beat the burner phone with a discarded brick until it was in dozens of pieces and disposed of it in a dumpster far from her work area.

Exiting the car, she headed into the house and found Danny in the living room with a basketball game on TV.

“I take it your work with Darius is done?”

“Yea, his problem is solved.”

“It was on the news. It attracted a lot of attention.”

“It was supposed to, and we agreed not to discuss specifics,” Tasha said firmly.

“The line regarding what we discuss keeps changing,” Danny pointed out.

“No specifics.”

“I've told you what I do. I shared that with you.”

Tasha nodded, “Yes, you have. But have you told me who you’re doing it for and how you do it?”

“No.”

“Exactly. We don’t discuss Who and How.”

Danny stayed quiet for a few seconds, then said, “I was just surprised. I didn’t know that was how you did things.”

Tasha sighed audibly, “I don’t. This was the first time. They trained me in explosives at school. In fact, that’s how this happened,” she said, pointing to where he’d removed her stitches half a year ago. “Today was unusual. It fit the situation. I certainly don’t plan to use that method other than as a last resort.”
