Dear Aunty Molly, Uncle Bill, Will and Edward,

Thank you very much for the scarf and mittens. I will wear them all the time. I really like blue-and-white stripes. It’s very cold here at the moment. Thank you for the New Zealand pencil case too. It’s really cute. I wish England had flightless parrots. Dad says thank you for the wallet. It will be really useful.

I hope you had a happy Christmas and will have a happy new year.

Lots of love,

Emmie x

Emmie checked the letters over. It would be awful to send a letter with a spelling or punctuation mistake. She also had a fear that she might accidentally write fuck off! even though she wasn’t thinking it. She realised that she sounded like the most boring teenager in the history of the world. Perhaps she should write saying that she was going to spend all her Christmas money on drugs, or a one-way ticket to Berlin, or at least records. She had been with Sam and Lucy to see Christiane F. They had all put on loads of make-up and nobody had even asked if they were eighteen.

She looked out at the damp Surrey countryside and wished that she could swim, like dolphins could swim. She wanted to stand with guns shooting over her head and to kiss and be kissed as though nothing could fall. She put on her coat and went out in the rain. Lucy had gone skiing and Sam had gone to stay with her granny in the Lake District. Why didn’t she have a granny in the Lake District? She bought some cigarettes and stood on the bridge over the railway line, smoking one after another and wishing something would happen. What was she meant to do? Go home and watch Dumbo again?

She was going to get out of Surrey and they wouldn’t see her for dust; or, she supposed, for grass cuttings and fragments of moss.
