Keep it simple

Gushing and going over the top are signals of insincerity. If you do that, you’re veering into fake flattery territory. There’s just no need for that because the simple truth is plenty powerful. The key is not diluting the force of an honest compliment by being prone to exaggeration. If you say everything is amazing and beautiful and incredible, who’s going to believe you when you apply one of those words to them? Say what you really think: “I like your haircut.” “The dessert you made was delicious.” “Your speech really struck a chord with me.” That will be plenty.

You’re five foot nothin’,

a hundred and nothin’, and you have

barely a speck of athletic ability.

And you hung in there with the best

college football players in the

land for two years.
