AT LEFT: A modern version of the painting Lesser

did for the 1963 novel Never Give a Millionaire

an Even Break, based on a reference photo of

one of his favorite models, Lisa Karan.

“In recent years, I started doing

contemporary paintings that look like my

old detective and crime novel covers. I

didn’t have any of the original artwork

I did for those, but I knew that vintage

cover art had become very popular with

illustration art collectors. So, I starting

recreating them, using my old reference

photographs, like the one I used for Never

Give a Millionaire an Even Break. It’s a

great pose by Lisa Karen. I also used

a version of it for Tomorrow is Murder

by Carter Brown in 1968, and did a

modern version of that one, too, in 2015.

“I used Lisa a lot. So did Robert McGinnis.

That’s one of the reasons why some of

our cover paintings from those days look

similar and get wrongly credited. We

were often using the same model. Nudity

didn’t bother Lisa a bit. She didn’t care.

She was fine with posing absolutely naked

with nothing on but high heels. She was

completely uninhibited in that way. She

was a very sexy woman. Very sexy and

very graceful. I’ve heard she also did

pinup photos for men’s magazines under

the name Lisa Kamish in the ‘60s. But I

knew her as Lisa Karan.”
