PRESENT ASSUMPTIONS

The assumptions from the 1950s are not valid today. People know less about God the Father, Christ, the local church, and the teachings of the Bible than ever before in American history. Pluralism has made people more aware of and has given people more options in every area of life, including spiritual choices. People today can consider themselves spiritual completely apart from the local church, especially the Christian church. This great divorce between being spiritual and having a connection with a local church presents new challenges. People have many different views of “god,” often even conflicting views within their own minds, and yet they do not see a problem with their view. Therefore, process in evangelism is increasingly important for lost people and for us as we share the gospel.

Is it possible that our assumptions about our listeners' back-grounds should change based on these changes? Absolutely. When several generations are ignorant of basic Christian beliefs, have almost no Christian memory, know little about Jesus, have lost a sense of guilt, and have many contradictory spiritual views, we should carefully examine the communication of our message.

I am reminded of political pundits on TV talking about whether candidates were “on message.” Through the course of campaigns, candidates have to talk about a great number of different issues. However, they usually have a central message that they want to communicate. If the candidate is not careful, he or she will get sidetracked from the central, on-point message. Because we live in spiritually turbulent times like today, it is essential that we get back on point with our message.
