Example 4

This method makes a straight-line crossing using the compass to point the kayak up into the tide to compensate for the stream. It is effectively a ferry glide.

Mark a line E to F to represent the crossing you will make. The measured distance is 4 miles.

From the tidal diamond information, the period used for the crossing will be five, four, and three hours before high water.

In the first hour of the crossing (five hours before HW), the 1-knot tide at 180 degrees will carry you 1 mile south. Start at point E on the chart, and measure one mile south to point G. This represents the total effect the tide should have in the first hour of paddling.
