Constructing the wall of a building. After the posts and beams are in place, the space between the posts is filled with strips of wood and bamboo fastened together to form a lattice. This lattice is then covered on both sides with mud mixed with straw, which is then covered with cloth and plastered.

Castles and Castle Culture

Constant warfare during the chaotic years of decentralized feudalism led to the spread of castle culture, which reached its height in the Momoyama Period (1573–1600). In the following Edo Period (1600–1868), castles were strictly regulated, and during the Meiji Period (1868–1912), many were destroyed. More were lost to neglect and World War II. Today, only twelve original castles survive.
