It’s worth noting that your favorite colors might not necessarily be what you want for your design aesthetic. Maybe you love orange, but you prefer neutral tones like beige, ivory, or gray for your home. Don’t worry—you don’t need to paint your walls orange if that’s too intense for you. Instead, use neutrals when you paint and sprinkle a bold color throughout your living room or kitchen with accessories like vases, blankets, or picture frames.

A word on painting your walls: As we discussed in the home-staging chapter, paint will transform your home. The paint hue that delights you will make your space feel distinctive. Ideally, you would paint before you move in, but we’ve been in that enviable position only once, so I know it’s not always possible. Even if you live in a 375-square-foot apartment like we did in California, you can get around a full room by pushing your furniture into the center of the space and covering it with a tarp or painter’s cloth.

Let’s go room by room to design your space, and please feel free to skip rooms that don’t apply. If you want to make quick changes, simply refer to the senses chart for each room. This will give you an idea of what items to include based on the senses that are most important to your environment. If you want to do more, think about what colors you want for each space and who will be sharing the rooms with you (as a guest or a permanent resident). There’s also a room-by-room chart in the appendix that you can use as a checklist.
