The Bishop-sacrifice

Let us take a few examples of this combination, for a general view and a consideration of its features.

The position in No. 102 shows the matter very simply. The three necessary pieces are present. But Black’s KRP is only defended by the King; there is no Knight on KB3, nor a Bishop on K2 to guard against Kt - Kt5. White’s Queen forbids Black’s escape by K-Kt3. So there is really but one variation, 1.K × B; 2Q-R5ch, K-Kt1, under the worst conditions, KB1 being occupied by a Rook and K2 by the Queen. Obviously 1..K-R1 is useless, 2Q-R5 still forcing mate.

We pass now to a more complicated example.

Here again Black’s King-side is insufficiently protected. The three White pieces are well posted to execute their manœuvre, the Knight being able to go to Kt5, guarded by the QB, while Black has only his Queen commanding that square. There are some differences to be noted: (1) White’s Queen not being at Kt4, Black’s King can go to Kt3; (2) his KB1 being vacant, he has also that flight-square; and (3) his KBP being unprotected, Black has to guard against both Q - R7 and Q-B7.
