There are a million explanations. Nate could have just cleaned his inbox. Emily might have moved on. There could be someone else now, or nobody at all. Or there could be an actual movie affair, with hotels and burner phones.

Her texts to him after they landed yesterday were brisk, and she told him the children were asleep in the car on the drive to the house. They were awake, though, wired even, fascinated with the minivan Naj showed up in—“It’s a friend’s,” she’d said airily—which of course had no seat belts in the back, so she and her mother each had to hold a child. They took turns berating Ava’s little sister.

“What’s that saying about good deeds?” Naj asked their father in the front seat, and he laughed as Ava and Mazna exchanged furious looks, an oddly warming moment between them. Fuck their husbands. Ava had learned to stop confiding her marital troubles to her mother—the news traveled like wildfire, and Mazna held grudges even longer than Naj—but it didn’t tamp down her urge in that moment to lay her head on her mother’s shoulder and whisper sleepily about Freckles and Portland as the nighttime cityscape of Beirut blurred by them like a sci-fi movie, the worn-down buildings hulking in the dark like massive animals, the highway trailed by the sea. Nate texted that he already missed them. She replied with a row of x’s.
