3.13 DEEP HOOK FINGER GRIP ON THE BOWSTRING
Purpose
This drill creates consistency in placing your fingers on the string. (See the Shallow Hook Finger Grip on the Bowstring drill.)
Signs It Is Needed
If you get unexpected results on a shot you felt was good, varying finger pressures may be the cause. In extreme cases you can pinch the nock end of the arrow enough to miss the target completely.
How to Do It
Perform this shooting drill at no more than 10 paces from the target, with a target face.
Start by placing your fingers on the string, going just past the first crease on the middle finger and at the first crease on the first and third fingers, using the “one over and two under the arrow” string grip. As you draw the bow, focus on creating most of the tension on the middle finger while maintaining the first and third fingers in the first joint. Pay close attention to the separation of your fingers from the nock of the arrow; neither should be pressing on the nock because any contact will cause a deflection in the path of the arrow.
Adjust the starting position by moving your middle finger closer to the arrow and then farther away from the arrow until the ideal clearance is achieved. Focus on relaxing the drawing hand while maintaining the string’s position on your fingers. Visually note the starting position of the tab versus the arrow so you can precisely duplicate the exact location of both the tab and your fingers on every shot.
Tips
The position of your thumb is important and can change the pressures in your drawing hand dramatically. Raising the thumb to the first finger loads the top finger more and raises the draw elbow. Lowering the thumb to the third finger unloads the top finger and loads the second and third more. Any change in finger tension will change the arrow impact point at the target. More top-finger pressure makes you shoot higher, and more on the third finger makes the impact lower.
Using a finger separator on your tab is highly recommended.
