Chapter

Fourteen

Thalia’s room was just like Julian’s, except her bed was smaller. There were lamps on two of the four walls, a small table nailed to the ground in one corner, with a chair before it. A crate was on the floor close to the bed, and a small window showed the sea view in the distance. Julian took a few seconds to look at it before hearing Thalia’s voice again.

“I always feel sick when I’m close to the sea. Still, I never thought I could feel as awful as I did flying with that creature. I screamed until my throat was sore, but his grip was too tight,” she said in almost a whisper. The experience had clearly carved itself into her heart, and Julian felt sorry for her.

Thalia sat on the bed, her eyes traveling along her hand to the blade on her lap. The metal seemed to respond to her touch, its patterns shining brightly as she caressed it.

“How did the blade feel about it?” Julian asked, and Thalia’s eyes pierced him with annoyance and anger.

“I’m asking genuinely. I know seemingly inanimate objects can have personality, even a spiritual body.”

“You are?” Her expression softened, and her shoulders seemed relieved of a heavyweight. “It’s funny how, in a world filled with magic, I was more than once ridiculed for saying that my sword spoke with me.”

“By whom?” Julian asked, moving slowly toward her.

“Everyone in the gang. But mostly Lok and my father. They always told me I was going crazy or seeking their attention. Lok threatened to throw me into the skies if I spoke again about the sword talking with me.”

“That’s terrible.”

“For a long time, I thought I was indeed crazy and ignored everything the blade told me to do, dismissing it as the ramblings of my head. Until I was tired of denying it.”

“And what does the sword say to you?” Julian asked, halting before her. She patted the bed beside her, inviting him to sit.

“It depends. In the beginning, it asked me a lot of questions. You see … this blade is ancient, but does not remember when the previous bearer had it in hand. It only knew it was an honor for me to own the blade, and when I refused to reply to its questions, it became silent for a long time—offended by my manners. However, with time, it spoke again. It never approved of what we did for Father. When they discovered I could open the jump portals with it, they made us steal a lot of gold and help the gang’s expansion through the capital until I couldn’t take it anymore. We plotted together my escape from Father’s headquarters. It taught me how to fight, and we discovered how to hide our tracks from Father’s trackers. When I decided to join the royal army, the blade shone bright blue for a whole week!” she said with excitement, and Julian smiled at her, happy for her to share some of her history. However, he knew the story didn’t end well.
