After a late night of drowning my sorrows in a pint of mint chocolate chip, I was ready to go the next morning, determined to put Zane out of my head. I loaded everything back in my car and was double checking my list when I tripped over Bernie.

“Bernie. Where did you come from? How do you always do that?”

I gave him a pat on the head and went to move around him, stopping when he blocked my path. He stared into my soul and refused to budge.

“I guess you want to come with me today, huh? Well, there’s going to be a lot of ladders around. I don’t want you getting hurt.”

He sniffed and stalked into his carrier, shooting me a look over his shoulder as if to say he was hurt I thought he’d be in the way. Cats.

I swung the strap for his bag over my shoulder and locked up behind us, shaking my head. I know I’m a total pushover, but he’s so darn cute. I’d just have to make sure he didn’t get hurt while I was working. I stopped at my storage unit on my way to the Victorian to pick up some extra curtain rods I’d have left over from a previous job.

Once I had everything I needed, I drove the short distance to the house and backed up the drive so I could get everything unloaded. I moved Bernie first, putting his bag in the kitchen to keep him out of the way until I was done. He gave a short chirp as I walked away.

“I promise it won’t take long, and I’ll let you loose. I know you’re too smart to run off or get stepped on, but be careful.”

My phone buzzed as I made my way back out to the car. I glanced at the screen before answering it.

“Hi, Logan. What’s up?”

“How’s my favorite cousin doing on this beautiful morning?”

“Still your only cousin.”

“Still my favorite. So, I wanted to apologize for the other night, Brynn. I’m so sorry...”

I cut him off before he could bring back any more bad memories.

“It’s fine, Logan. You can’t help what happened. He was going to find out eventually, I guess.”

“I know, but I still feel terrible. Can I buy you lunch? You never finished your tacos the other night. We could go there again.”

“Ugh. No, thanks. That girl of yours ruined tacos for me. At least for now. Gosh, I sure hope that’s not permanent. That would totally suck.”

“She’s not my girl, Brynn. I won’t be seeing her again.”

“You don’t have to break up with her just because she said what she did, Logan. It’s okay.”

“No, it’s not; and yes, I do. So, lunch with anything but tacos?”

“Fine, I guess. I’ll be up here working on the Victorian.”

“I’ll come up around noon. How about Toonies?”

Toonies made the best burgers known to mankind. My stomach gave an appreciative gurgle, reminding me I hadn’t eaten breakfast.

“Sounds good, I’ll see you then.”

“Love you, Brynnie.”

“I think I like it better when you call me names,” I said, making a face.
