My cage was only slightly better than the one I’d been confined to while being tortured by Rick. As with the case with Rick, I’d been stripped naked and denied anything that might support my modesty, keep me warm, or help me maintain proper hygiene.

“Do you plan on raping me?” I nervously asked as Taranis slammed the cage door shut and secured the lock.

“You do not appeal to me,” he briskly replied before turning and exiting the room with bold, precise strides.

Although relieved to escape more torture of that nature, I still worried about what awaited me. Just how did they plan on studying me. Of course, they’d want to look at my blood, but would that be all? Ralph’s idea was to dissect me. Was that their intention as well? Bethany managed to get to me just in the nick of time when I was being held by Ralph, but that wouldn’t happen now.

I made no effort to wipe away the tears that slowly slid down my cheeks as I studied my surroundings. It was what I would consider a typical lab would look like. Unlike the blood farm, mine was the only cage in the room. My confine was situated in an out of the way corner where it would not interfere with the activities in a room that was filled with state of the art laboratory equipment. There were even several computers positioned about.

It was clear to me that this world did not suffer the losses that mine had. They possessed advanced technology that I guessed was superior to what had been taken from us upon the take over of the New Order.

If these vampires are the actual ones behind the takeover, this has got to be the true headquarters of the New Order, I thought. Everything on the surface must just be a façade.

It was this realization that alerted me to the fact that Jared and his vampire friends were looking in the wrong place for the cure to vampirism. It would never be found in the labs on the surface. My gut told me that it was in that very same room with me. Staring at the row of glass front coolers, I peered at the contents, but nothing was labeled in a way that would indicate it was what I was hoping to find.

A gush of cold air rushed past me as the door at the far end of the room opened. I cradled my torso with my arms in an attempt to warm myself as a male vampire in a white lab coat marched in with determination. He stopped only briefly outside of my cage and spared me a mere glance before moving on.

Instinct told me to keep my mouth shut. So, I did. I even went so far as to avert my eyes just in case he was sensitive enough to feel me staring at him.

He worked silently for fifteen minutes or so before returning to my cage.

“I understand you’re trouble,” he muttered as he unlocked the door and slid it open.
