The Pillar, Amaranthine Loop

“It is a good theory, and she said it herself—prior to creating a crown of Quantum Glass,” Vincent muttered telepathically to Sid.

Vincent trudged up the hill behind the cottage, a lone figure walking in the moonlight. He left Renata sleeping at the cottage, hoping a walk outside would help him think.

“Manifesting Quantum Glass!” Sid exclaimed into Vincent’s mind. The Tardigrade had retreated back into the corked glass vial of water swinging from Vincent’s neck. “If it had not occurred in the Pool of Verite’s dimension—”

“She is evolving,” Vincent said. “Whatever buffer the Pillar would be for another mortal is not effective with her.”

“We could not know what effect a Quantum Gate would have on a mortal.”

“Do the math, Sid. If she is the creator of that Gate, and her mortal energy tied to it while the Gate is suspended through time and different dimensions…” Vincent shook his head, stuffing his hands in his pockets. He began a slow walk up the hill. He could see his breath in the air, the night crisp and clear. “This confluence of inter-dimensional events has caused her to evolve somehow—even though she remains in the Pillar where time is suspended. She has become a mortal Anchor of Time. I am convinced of it.”

“That… cannot be,” Sid said.

“Another broken law of the Universe as we know it. How many is that now?” Vincent paused on the hillside. He looked back, marking his progress while taking in the night landscape.

“Pillars were not made for mortals. Perhaps this is an effect of the Pool—”

“The Pool revealed this to me.” Vincent shut his eyes, suppressing the memory of kissing Renata, which had seared itself into his mind. He shook his head in frustration.

“The branch of your Pillar in this dimension of New-Ashemore has a space-time that equals one year there to our one day in the Pillar. I am still making my initial calculations, but in Renata's home dimension many, many years have passed,” Sid said in awe. “The distance between these dimensions is vast, and the longer she is apart from her home dimension, the faster time passes there. I calculate many hundreds of years to every sunrise in the Pillar…”

“Enough time for even a mortal to understand Quantum Glass?” Vincent said, moving his hair back from his forehead.

“Perhaps. Until then, there is no other place for her. She must remember who she is, or was, or may become,” Sid said. “With her Quantum Gate open in two dimensions, I hypothesize the development of her abilities has accelerated.”

“She will break,” Vincent said, frowning at the thought. “I know of no creature or being able to harness and hold the energy of an Anchor. It is why they are irrevocable points in history.”

“They are a Quantum constant.” Sid agreed.

“There is no equation to change time. An Anchor of Time is an immortal, unyielding, cosmic constant.”

“A mortal Anchor!” Sid said. “She is a paradox within a paradox.”

“She emoted into my mind today, Sid. Impossible.”

“Take me to the crown.
